Launching of the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Voluntary Stakeholder Group on Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, and Migration, Arab States (VSG on GCCDRRM) Group

The UN Women Regional Office of Arab States and the Arab Water Council has celebrated launching the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Voluntary Stakeholder Group on Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, and Migration, Arab States (VSG on GCCDRRM) group Tuesday, March 23rd, 2021 with the support of the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the SDG-Climate Facility.

 

The UN Women Regional Office of Arab States and the Arab Water Council has celebrated launching the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Voluntary Stakeholder Group on Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change, and Migration, Arab States (VSG on GCCDRRM) group Tuesday, March 23rd, 2021 with the support of the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the SDG-Climate Facility.

The Webinar: “Gender, Climate Change, and Migration: Promising Policy and Programmatic Practices Addressing Linkages from a Gender Equality and Women's Leadership Perspective” was addressing the gender-responsive disaster prevention and risk reduction, climate change mitigation, and adaptation strategies, and migration to achieve inclusive sustainable development goals.

The webinar started by sharing a Short Video Screening on VSG on GCCDRRM group mandate, and achievements to date then we moved to the panel discussion that was Chaired by Amb. Nada Al Agizy, Director, Sustainable Development and International Cooperation at the League of Arab States (LAS) and Co-moderated by Dr. Jean D’Cunha, Senior Global Advisor on International Migration, Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS), UN Women, and Eng. Heba Al Hariry, Deputy Technical Director, Arab Water Council (AWC). The Panelists Mrs. Fleur Newman-Action Empowerment Unit Lead-UN Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC) Germany, Dr. Everisto Mapedza-Senior Researcher at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) Ghana, Mrs. Dalia Abulfotuh-Agricultural Officer at FAO Regional Office for Near East and North Africa Egypt, Dr. Maya Nehma-Director of the Lebanon Reforestation Initiative in Lebanon, and Mrs. Touria Afti-Director General of Water Resources and General Engineer at the Ministry of Equipment, Transport, Logistics and Water in Morocco have all enriched the event with their experiences and helped us highlight the targeted messages related to Gender, Climate and Migration Nexus. They have facilitated a memorable conversation between the panel, moderators, and 71 participants.
