H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council and former Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt, was elected as Deputy Chairman of the UNESCO International Hydrological Program (IHP) for the Arab Region. The election took place on the occasion of the 22nd Session of the IHP Intergovernmental Councilheld in Paris during the period June 13 – 17, 2016.

Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid, President of the Arab Water Council and former Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Egypt, was elected as Deputy Chairman of the UNESCO International Hydrological Program (IHP) for the Arab Region. The election took place on the occasion of the 22nd Session of the IHP Intergovernmental Councilheld in Paris during the period June 13 – 17, 2016. The IHP program aims at adopting visions and priorities of the Arab region in the field of water, hydrology and environment to overcome challenges in those domains. This takes place through adopting state-of-the-art technologies, capacity building and awareness raising, in coordination with research institutes and development agencies concerned with water management in the Arab region. The IHP program deals with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as far as climate change impact on water resources is concerned. It is also concerned with non-conventional water resources, including desalinated water, reuse of agricultural drainage water, brackish groundwater and treated wastewater. Setting of priorities and follow-up of implementation procedures take place in coordination with the Intergovernmental Council of the IHP.
