The Arab Water Council (AWC) organized its 3rd General Assembly (GA) ordinary session in Cairo, Egypt, during the period February 26-28, 2013, summoned by AWC President.  The meeting was attended by some 350 participants from AWC members, Arab country representatives, Ambassadors, delegates of international and regional organizations, as well as NGOs and public figures.

The opening session of the GA witnessed a number of opening remarks by His Royal Highness Prince Khaled Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz, Deputy Minister of Defense & AWC Hon. President; H.E. Mr. Al-Sadek Al-Mahdy, Former Prime Minister, Sudan, and representative of public figures at AWC; H.E. Prof. M. Bahaa El-Din, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Egypt; H.E. Dr. A. Khalifa, Minister of Drinking Water & Sanitation Utilities, Egypt. This was preceded by an Opening Address by H.E. Prof. M. Abu-Zeid, President of AWC, who shed the light on AWC latest activities and achievements and the challenges in the coming period.

During the convention, elections of AWC President for the period (2013 – 2015) were performed, in accordance with article (17) of AWC Constitution, where the majority of voices voted for re-electing H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abu-Zeid for the next period.  Elections of BOG members for the period (2013 – 2015) was performed as well, in accordance with article (15) of the Constitution, through secret ballot.

The GA event also witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between AWC and the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, for enhancing cooperation between both parties in order to promote dialogue and share knowledge and experiences to develop and enhance management of water resources on the Arab regional scale. 

Simultaneously, AWC took the lead in organizing three technical workshops on “Climate Change in MENA Region,”  “The Role of Parliamentarians in Achieving Sustainable Water Resources Management in the Arab Region,” and “Water Use Efficiency in the Arab Countries”.  

AWC invited its members and interested partners and stakeholders to this important event and associated workshops. 

The AWC report was presented by Dr. Safwat Abd El Dayem, secretary General, Arab Water Council followed by the financial report presented by Dr. Khaled Abu Zeid, Treasurer of the AWC.

This was followed by electing the New Board of Governors for the period of (2013-2015) as well as discussing the proposed amendments in the AWC constitution. Finally the proposed work plan for the period of (2010-2012) was discussed.

The General Assembly of the Arab Water Council (AWC) represents the source of all powers of the Council, responsible for drawing its policies, and following up and monitoring its activities.  The General Assembly Meeting is a tri-annual event where AWC members, Board of Governors, representatives from regional institutions, international partners, private sector, the scientific community, and civil society meet to discuss and review the progress of work plans for the next term and collectively seek solutions to challenges and setting strategic direction for the future of the Council.  During the General Assembly, the Council elects its Board of Governors for next term.
